Spoon Carving

£50.00 per person 
Maximum of 4 people

An interactive and enjoyable introduction to spoon carving.  Let your creative juices flow as you select, cut, split, chop and carve your wood into a unique spoon. Learn the basic skills required to make your own spoon from green woods sourced sustainably on site.

You will experience:

  • Selecting your wood, sourced sustainably from the marshes
  • Preparing your spoon blank, using a carving axe
  • Using a variety of straight carving knives and hook-knive
  • Finishing techniques, use of oils and spoon care

Charcoal Making

£35.00 per person 
Maximum of 5 people

Enjoy your time on Alderfen Marshes exploring the ins and outs of charcoal making.  During this interactive and experiential session you will have the chance to get hands-on with the charcoal making process with the opportunity to learn useful techniques and ask questions.

You will experience:

  • The art and science of making charcoal
  • Selecting, preparing and storing wood for making charcoal
  • Loading and firing the charcoal retort and char kiln
  • Grading and bagging the finished product

Sustainability is becoming an ever-more important part of our lives. Experience some simple, effective and transferable ways of creating sustainable systems which reuse and utilise your own natural resources. An interactive experience tailored to identifying solutions relevant to you.

You will experience:

  • The concepts and mindset behind permaculture
  • Seeing the influence of permaculture on Alderfen Marshes management practices
  • Identifying opportunities to instigate permaculture practices in your own environment

Surround yourself with open space, fresh air and wilderness as you get hands-on with nature on Alderfen Marshes. Each season throws up different challenges, with activities all coordinated towards enhancing the rich wetland habitat, unique to the Norfolk Broads.

You will experience:

  • A walk through the managed habitats on Alderfen Marshes
  • Hands-on conservation activities, understanding how they add value to maintaining habitat diversity 
  • Opportunity to stop, look and listen to the rich variety of flora and fauna on the marshes
  • These are outdoor, all-weather experiences. Sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and layers are strongly recommended.
  • A covered outdoor area is provided in the event of rain with a fire bowl lit in colder temperatures.
  • Courses are open to over 18s only
  • Lunch is not provided, (bring a packed lunch for full-day courses) but coffees, teas and biscuits will be available on the day.
